By exploring materials such as paper, aluminum foil, and sand over long periods of time, Hwang Sueyon (B.1981) creates sculptures that naturally reveal the characteristics of these materials while simultaneously highlighting the passage of time. She has a biological perspective when viewing her work, which can be seen as an attitude of studying, understanding, and accepting the vulnerability of the materials by regarding them as equals to herself. Hwang draws countless lines on paper or continuously pounds foil, witnessing the changes in each material, and eventually ceases the action not on her own terms but where the state of the material leads. When using French curve rulers to create slopers and eventually assemble them into paper sculptures, she finishes them with care, trying her utmost not to disturb the physicality of the paper. This gives the viewer a glimpse into her approach to respecting and revealing the “personality” of each piece.

Hwang Sueyon graduated with a B.F.A. and M.F.A. from the Seoul National University of Science and Technology's Department of Fine Arts and has held solo exhibitions at the Kumho Museum of Art, Dimensionvariable Space, Doosan Gallery, Doosan Gallery New York, and Hakgojae Design | PROJECT SPACE. She has also participated in various group exhibitions at the Buk-Seoul Museum of Art, the SeMA Bunker, the National Museum of Contemporary Art Gwacheon, and the Kumho Museum of Art. In 2016, she presented her work at the 11th Gwangju Biennale, and has been a participant in residencies at the SeMA Nanji Residency, the Doosan Residency, the Seoul Art Space Geumcheon, and the Kumho Art Studio.
