Through the medium of photography, Kai Oh's (B.1992) work begins with common scenes, such as nature, found in the various cities she has lived in. Her reluctance to accept set rules or taken-for-granted standards leads to attempts to redefine the universal perception of photography, which most regard as a means to simply capture and fix moments. Oh sees ‘digital’ photography as more fluid rather than immutable, even more so than physical matter, with the potential for variation to convey more. "I am a photographer because most things are rigid," she explains, attempting to reveal the “true state of everything being in flux” behind moments that are generally perceived as static. This is reflected in her work in a multitude of forms, such as transforming, rearranging, and assembling photographed images to create collages and altering the physicality of printed photographs.
Kai Oh studied sculpture at Seoul National University and photography at the Nuremberg Academy of Fine Arts in Germany, and is currently studying at Columbia University in the United States. She held solo exhibitions 《Softsharp》(Cylinder) in 2021 and 《Half Sticky》 as part of IBK & GMoma YOUNG ARTISTS in 2023. She has participated in group exhibitions at the Ilmin Museum of Art, Busan Museum of Contemporary Art, Doosan Gallery, and G Gallery, and has won awards such as UNSEEN Platform PRIMERE, Deutscher Fotobuchpreis, and Foam Talent.
사진 매체를 기반으로 하는 오가영(B.1992)의 작업은 자신이 머물렀던 다양한 도시에서 발견하는 자연과 같은 공통적인 장면들로부터 출발한다. 정해진 규칙이나 당연시되는 기준을 편안히 받아들이지 않는 그의 태도는 나아가 사진이 단순히 순간을 포착하여 고정한다는 보편적 의식을 재정의하려는 시도들로 이어진다. 오가영은 실재하는 물질보다 ‘디지털’ 사진이 오히려 불역이 아닌 가장 유연한 상태이며, 그렇기 때문에 보다 많은 것을 전달할 수 있는 변주 가능성이 존재한다고 여긴다. 그는 "대부분의 것이 굳어져 있기 때문에 사진을 찍는다"고 말하며, 부동으로 인지하는 순간의 이면에 가려진 '모든 것이 유연하게 움직이는 진정한 상태'를 드러내려는 시도를 한다. 이는 촬영한 이미지를 변형, 재배치, 합성하여 콜라주를 만들거나 인쇄된 사진의 물성을 달리하는 등 다양한 방식으로 작업에 녹아있다.
오가영은 서울대학교에서 조소, 독일의 뉘른베르크 예술 아카데미의 사진을 전공했으며 현재 미국의 컬럼비아 대학 재학 중이다. 2021년에 《Softsharp》(실린더), 2023년에 IBK & GMoma YOUNG ARTISTS의 일환으로 개인전 《Half Sticky》를 진행했다. 일민미술관을 비롯한 부산현대미술관, 두산갤러리, 지갤러리 등에서 개최한 단체전에 참여했으며, UNSEEN Platform PRIMERE, Deutscher Fotobuchpreis, Foam Talent와 같은 수상 경력이 있다.
